DAI is implementing the USAID funded program Women in the Economy (WIE) across the five major population centers in the regional economic zones (Kabul, Mazar, Heart, Jalalabad and Kandahar) in Afghanistan. The primary objective of Women in the Economy is to enable educated Afghan women between the ages of 18 and 30 to increase their participation in the mainstream, formal economy by securing employment with advancement potential and by helping grow revenues for businesses owned by women or that employ women as 30% or more of their staffs.
WIE’s Private Sector Development (PSD) component has been charged with growing revenues of businesses through innovative approaches to private sector development. Innovation will require thinking about private sector development in a new way and working with non-traditional partners in addition to leveraging other donor projects. New solutions may be found anywhere, including private sector solutions to changes in developed markets. DAI/WIE is implementing a small short term project with HEMAYAT to assist a group of 25 midwife house businesses in Jalalabad, Kandahar, Mazar, and Herat.
HEMAYAT’s Midwives houses (Khana-e-Qabila – KQ) are supported by HEMAYAT Project of USAID in 4 regions: Kandahar, Jalalabad, Mazar, and Herat. All these midwife houses are run and owned by women. So far number of midwife houses supported by HEMAYAT is 25 in 4 regions. Midwife Houses are modeled as home based businesses by providing health care services such as family planning, maternal newborn health services with focus on reducing maternal and newborn mortality along with increasing coverage of high-impact interventions for maternal and newborn survival. All services provided by KQ are fee based so that KQ owners have revenue stream and their community enjoy some home based midwife clinics.
KQs have been trained by HEMAYAT Project on all healthcare services they provide; however, after HEMAYAT’s request, those KQs need some business management training and mentorship so that their businesses are sustainable and KQ owners can manage their businesses. Currently KQs are lacking all the basic business management skills which are integral part of running their businesses.
WIE would like to cover 25 KQs in 4 regions. WIE will provide all the basic business management skills training and mentorship together with providing all the necessary tools so that KQs can operate their businesses sustainably, have better revenue stream and experience higher profit margin.
